Component Test

Both when developing a suite of new components or when evaluating an existing component library, component tests are a flexible and efficient way to ensure that UI modules are fully accessible and can be re-used and recombined across a variety of pages.

The focus here is not the entire page, but the technical and design aspects that apply to a particular component, for example, a dialog, a form element, or more complex interactive UI modules such as navigation menus, filter functions, tab panels, or video players.

The test is based on the same accessibility requirements as the classic BIK BITV test. Only those success criteria that apply to the respective component are used. The basis is the current European standard EN 301 549, which encompasses the international WCAG guidelines.

Typical areas of application

The BIK Component Test is particularly suitable for organizations that want to integrate accessibility in a structured way into their development processes, for example:

  • Companies using design systems or component libraries for their sites
  • Development and product teams building modular web applications
  • Organizations that need to ensure that new UI components are fully accessible
  • Situations where an individual component should be checked independent of an overall test

Component tests and other BIK tests

The Component Test complements existing test procedures. While a full BIK BITV test examines various page types across a web site or application and the BIK Core User Flow Test evaluates central use cases and their processes, the component test focuses on individual reusable modules.

The three types of test have different objectives and can be combined:

  • Component test for the early verification of individual UI modules
  • BIK Core User Flow Test focusing on the main user processes
  • BIK BITV test for the independent overall evaluation of a website. When representative, such a test may lead to a conformance statement.

Please note that the Component Test does not represent proof of conformity for an entire page, site or application. Instead, it focuses specifically on the evaluation of individual stand-alone components. Even when the component itself is fully accessible, the overall accessibility depends on the page context in which components are used.
